Here at Malsis, Drama is offered as a subject to children in years
Reception to Year 5. Each class will have at least 1 lesson a week
and every child will take part in a stage production.
In the
Pre-prep Department Drama lessons are scheduled within the daily
schedule for the Reception class and Years 1 and 2.
The Junior Production takes place in the Easter term and every child in
years 3,4 and 5 have an important role to play in their play.
For years 6,7 and 8 Drama becomes a voluntary activity on Monday and
Friday at break and on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The Major
Production takes place in the Autumn Term and many senior pupils
take part in this exciting endeavour.
What do children gain from drama?
First
and above all – enjoyment. Then comes a wide range of other
benefits: drama provides an outlet for self-expression and helps the
development of imagination and artistic awareness; it increases
social awareness through role-play, drama sharpens mental awareness
and drama also aids fluency of speech.
Drama is a multi-faceted subject and incorporates many cross-curricular links. It allows children to focus on different faceted characters and is an inlet into unexplored emotions and capabilities.
Why do we play games in Drama?
Through games the children become used to getting on their feet and moving
around, without being called upon to do anything the least bit arty
or dramatic. This lessons the embarrassment factor and reduces
attention-seeking behaviour and allows the children to grow in
confidence and builds teamwork within the class. All the while,
developing stage presence and spatial awareness. Also, by playing
games the children accept discipline and it allows the class to be
fair and non-judgmental on decision-making games.
