Music is a very important part of life at Malsis and
opportunities exist for every child to learn almost any instrument,
giving them the chance to attain the highest level in examinations
and scholarship assessments. Time is set aside for private practice
and performance in public; ensemble groups rehearse regularly.
Singing is to the fore: the Chapel and Chamber lead our services
and there are occasions for the Girls' and Training choirs to
entertain. The House Music Festival and the Carol Service are
highlights in our calendar and we have a 'Mini Concert' every term,
giving soloists and ensembles the chance to play and sing.
We also enjoy visits from the choirs and orchestras of senior
schools: musicians from Loretto, Kilgraston and Stowe Schools have
delighted us with their performances recently.
Music is part of the curriculum for the children from Year 3 to
8. In music lessons they learn about rhythm, melodies, movement,
singing and theory work. A computer programme - Groovy Music - which
lets each child explore and create their own music and which
introduces loud and quiet sounds, music words and symbols and long
and short beats is much enjoyed by all. And in class singing we
develop the children's ability to perform rhythmic patterns
confidently and with a strong sense of pulse and pitch.
