It is hoped that pupils will enjoy Geography at Malsis and be inspired to be fascinated and inquisitive about the world around them. It is an increasingly important subject as society becomes more global in nature and issues such as the environment will affect future generations as never before. It is an excellent subject in which skills and knowledge attained in other parts of the curriculum can be applied and enhanced.
1. Understand the local environment and people
- in terms of physical and human geography
- in order to enable comparison with other areas both in the UK and
abroad
2. Understand people and places in more distant areas
- appreciate differences in climates and landscapes
- appreciate differences in distribution of natural and
technological resources and wealth
- understand how people come to terms with these
- rural and urban, rich and poor areas should be studied
3. Understand concepts of:
- recognition and classification of physical and human features
- processes that determine physical and human landscapes
- location, place, direction, distance and accessibility
4. Acquire skills of:
- observation, measurement and recording of data
- presentation of data using maps, graphs, charts, tables, diagrams,
sketches and text
- map-making and map-reading including use of aerial photographs
- using atlases and globes
5. Appreciate environmental problems
- problems of exploiting natural resources
- need to protect and manage environments (natural and man-made)
- at local, regional, national, international and global scales
A number of methods are used such as responding to questions,
creative writing, data response, model building, visits, fieldwork,
observation, investigations / projects, visiting speakers. Classroom
organisation is such that work is mostly done individually but there
is much whole class discussion and some scope for small group work
and discussion.
Fieldwork and Visits
This is very much encouraged enabling pupils to learn an enquiry
based approach to geography. Forthcoming fieldwork / visits will be:
Y3/4 - local area studies in and around the school
Y5 - mapping work in the Dales
Y6 - microclimate studies locally.
Y7 - weather studies
Y8 - river studies in the Dales
Safety is of paramount importance when undertaking fieldwork
or visits and risk assessments are made and updated for every trip.
ICT
This is used in various ways; internet searches by pupils for
specific topics especially where up-to-date information is required
e.g. recent earthquakes using or CD-ROM as a teaching tool; logging
weather information using the weather station linked to the PC in
the computer room; writing up reports using word processing; writing
up scholarship/CE projects using word processing, spreadsheets,
scanning pictures, photographs and maps for use in projects.
DVD/Video
The department uses a variety of recorded media to support work in
all years and the large video library contains a wealth of
fascinating material, particularly for physical geography.
