History at Malsis

Departmental Mission Statement

We aim to provide an exciting and varied experience of history for children of all ages and thereby to establish high levels of enthusiasm and achievement amongst ourselves and those we teach.

We seek to introduce children to the essential awareness of living in time and to develop powers of analysis, expression and discrimination through the study of materials left from the past.

In doing so we hope to encourage a genuine interest in the past inside and outside the classroom. We believe that what happened then matters now, and feel that children should become aware of the importance and enjoyment of history.

History Today

History has never been so popular. The television, the internet, books, magazines and the cinema reflect this popularity. History is a source of great pleasure and interest to very many people of all ages, whether going to the cinema for one of the new blockbuster films, watching an episode of ‘Robin Hood’ or reading a historical novel. ‘Timewatch’, ‘Timeteam’ and ‘Who do you think you are?’ attract huge audiences. Then of course there are the millions of people who visit historical museums, sites, or stately homes that contribute so greatly to the so called ‘heritage industry’.

In addition it has never been more important to understand the world and its problems: a difficult task which can only be accomplished if today’s events can be put into their proper historical perspective – peace in Northern Ireland, race relations in South Africa, tension in the Middle East and anxiety about the proliferation of nuclear weapons.  History is all around us!

Accommodation and Resources

History is taught in Room A by Mr Lush and Mr Peel, in Room B by Mrs Green and in Room T by Mrs Dowley. Each classroom has the audio-visual resources necessary to make use of an extensive collection of CD’s, videos, slides and tape-recorded programmes. Displays on the walls have a historical flavour and often recent work by the children is exhibited. Teaching of small groups can take place in the Seminar Room; space for role play is available in the Drama Studio.

Research on the internet is encouraged in the ICT centre and is possible in the classrooms. In addition access to the five interactive whiteboards and projectors including the one in Mrs Green’s room, is possible for members of the department and their classes. Finally, there is an extensive department library in Room A and the children use the books in the school Library for research purposes. All textbooks are loaned to the children.
