Aims of the Mathematics Department
To provide a relevant, challenging and enjoyable curriculum for
all pupils.
To encourage pupils to work systematically and to show a respect
for accuracy and meaning.
To engender a familiarisation with mathematics and an awareness
that it enables children to interpret, predict and explain
situations.
To encourage pupils to work independently and with others,
applying the rules of mathematics across the curriculum.
Mathematics Syllabus
The work in Years 7 and 8 is based upon the syllabus for the ISEB
Common Entrance. All
children are expected to reach a level of competence of at least the
lower tier level, but many will be extended to the higher tier level
or beyond, if they are
able to enter for Scholarships to senior schools.
The work in Years 4, 5 and 6 is based around the Target Mathematics
Scheme but this is by no means the only resource used.
A major emphasis is placed upon the learning of basic number
facts, times tables and mental arithmetic skills.
However the scheme of work does not only concentrate on
number but also includes algebra, shape, space, measures and data
handling.
In Year 3 much emphasis is put on gaining numerical skills and
confidence in the manipulation of number.
The Abacus Mathematics Scheme is used with extension work
from the Target Scheme.
As with all the years the National Curriculum guidelines and the
National Numeracy Strategy provide a philosophy to enable the
children to receive a complete and varied mathematical education.
