Religious Studies teaching at Malsis is firmly rooted in the Christian tradition. During their time at the school, we hope that the children will develop a spiritual and conscientious view of life; R.S. lessons provide a great deal of input here. Right from the early years in the Pre-prep Department at Garden House, the children are introduced to many well-known Bible stories and Christian Festivals.
Once they reach the Junior School (Years 3, 4 and 5) children are
taught Bible stories, using a variety of resources, including the
Lion Children’s Bible.
All children have their own copies of both the Lion Children’s Bible
and the Good News Bible. In Year 6 the children are introduced to
the other world religions, learning in detail about one of them.
This year the children in Year 6 have been studying Hinduism. A
visit to the
Hindu (Mandir)
Temple in Bradford was arranged and enjoyed by
all; it was a fascinating experience, following which the children
studies Hindu special occasions. This culminated in a classroom
re-enactment of a wedding. In Years 7 and 8, it is the Good News
Bible which is used for a more detailed study of Scripture, focusing
on the central beliefs of Christianity. Class work involves a lot of
discussion based on Christian teachings and related contemporary
issues. In addition, the lives and work of certain Christian
reformers are studied, for example: Martin Luther King, Mother
Teresa, Archbishop Oscar Romero and Dame Cicely Saunders. This is a
valuable part of the pupils’ education as it helps them develop a
good social conscience rooted in Christian teaching.
Outside the classroom, children throughout the school have opportunities to develop their faith if they wish. At Christmas time, the Pre-Prep children take part in a special Christmas show. There is a part for everyone, no matter how young, and all who come to watch this rather special event may expect to be delighted by it.
Chapel is a special part of Saturday mornings at Malsis and the singing is always complimented by a number of parents and visitors. Both the Chapel Choir and the Chamber Choir are a joy to listen to and a place in either is a privilege worth striving for. Chapel services are now held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings as well; these mid-week services have been varied in style, sometimes being led by Forms and sometimes by Houses. Friends and family are most welcome to join us on all of these occasions.
