Music matters hugely because it aids every aspect of development in young children. It helps with speech, it enhances intellectual development, it encourages self-expression and self-confidence and even improves coordination. For these reasons music pulses through the veins of Malsis which is an established centre of Musical Excellence.
Leading the way is James Ashworth, Director of Music, who came to Malsis following a distinguished career as a baritone soloist performing in all the major concert halls in London. He is also well known as a voice coach with many of his ex-students now performing lead roles in professional opera and London’s West End musicals (for example Amy Nuttall and Simon Schofield) and was also a vocal coach to the famous Huddersfield Choral Society.
Has your child got musical talent? James Ashworth would love to hear about the next budding star and can advise about the opportunities he can offer at Malsis. Click here to request a call back from James Ashworth.
Appreciation for music is embedded in everyday life with timetabled music for pupils from Reception to Year 7, many visits from inspiring artists and exciting trips to concerts. Singing is ‘cool’ at Malsis and children strive to be good enough to sing in Mr Ashworth's three choirs: Junior (training), Chamber (girls) and Chapel (boys). Those that show exceptional promise are carefully introduced to the next step such as auditions for Yorkshire Youth Choir.
In addition, children are offered the chance to play any instrument for fun, from the harp to the electric drums – and everything in between! With 14 practice rooms, 15 pianos dotted about the school and a whole host of other instruments to have a dabble with or hire, it is not surprising that instrumental music lessons are very popular. The team of 12 specialist visiting teachers have been carefully chosen for their skills and most importantly their ability to inspire the children.
Pupils’ confidence is boosted through regular performance opportunities enjoyed by the whole school. Those who want to, enter the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and Trinity Rockschool’s examinations, helping secure coveted scholarships and awards to their next school.
