Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band

For the second consecutive year, the world famous Brighouse and Rastrick brass band took Malsis School by storm with another rousing concert to finish off their season. The major de-tour from their usual big concert hall venues, such as the Albert Hall, came about through contacts with Director of Music at Malsis, James Ashworth who has sung bass baritone with them in the past. Since the bands’, concert last year, twice as many young pupils have taken up brass instruments. This is music to the ears of trumpet playing Headmaster, Marcus Peel, who plays along with the school’s brass ensemble.

Hands on Horticultural learning at Harlow Carr Hands on Horticultural learning at Harlow Carr

Rain did not dampen the spirits of adventurous Malsis Year 1 and 2 pupils when they explored Royal Horticultural Society’s Harlow Carr in Harrogate. They found all sorts of plants new to them including some that smelt and others that were furry. They discovered a giant Logness Monster and a ‘bug bivi’ in the Log Maze. This large model of a bug made from logs, pipes and tubes creates a home for all sorts of real bugs and insects and it has inspired the children to make their own in their wooded grounds back at Malsis School. The highlight of their time spent in Harlow Carr’s educational building, was finding out that there is a seed called an ‘elephant’s bottom’ and planting some seeds of their own.

Viking History brought to life Viking History brought to life

Year 4’s History trip took them on a visit to the Jorvik Museum in York. After exploring ‘The Dig’ and seeing the remains of a Viking village, the children experienced the sights, sounds and smells of the Jorvik experience. George Hill and Georgie Richmond re-enacted a Viking wedding, followed pretty swiftly by a Viking annulment!

The children in Reception and Year 3 were visited by North Yorkshire Hedgehog Rescue. The children learned all about hedgehogs and their baby hoglets, their habits and their favourite food. The children met Smartie, a hedgehog the Rescue Centre have cared for since she was a hoglet and discovered how to make a garden safe for hedgehogs which are now in danger of becoming extinct. Malsis School has now adopted Mrs Smartie and some of her friends from the Rescue Centre, giving them a second chance in the wonderful natural and safe environment away from main roads that Malsis School provides. They will be released in the grounds later this summer.

Ingleborough Cave Adventure Ingleborough Cave Adventure

Each term the boarding pupils at Malsis have a surprise outing and in May they set off into the Yorkshire Dales National Park for a visit to Ingleborough Nature Trail and Cave. They enjoyed a lovely walk through the wooded valley alongside the lake and marvelled at the ancient ‘money trees.’ They had a fascinating guided tour through the caves, learning about stalactites and stalagmites. The’ witches hand’ coming through the roof and the ‘elephant’s bottom’ sticking out of the wall were key highlights and the adventure was rounded off with an ice-cream treat.

Celebrating 90 years of Malsis School - 1920’s Day Celebrating 90 years of Malsis School - 1920’s Day

As part of the celebrations for the 90th Anniversary of the opening of Malsis Independent Prep School in Yorkshire, the children in Year 4 and 5 spent a day studying The Roaring Twenties. The children learnt about the Age of Jazz and listened to some of the music of the era in its original format and also enjoyed a Buster Keaton silent movie. The children made up a poem using the vernacular of the day and were amazed to learn that ‘ground grippers’ were new shoes, ‘crumb crushers’ were teeth, ‘a skin beater‘ was a drummer, ‘moo juice’ was milk, ‘to igg’ someone was to ignore them, ‘the brightening’ was the dawn and ‘a pounder’ is a policeman. As part of a Design Technology lesson the children then made Art Deco frames in to which to put their poems. In the afternoon, visiting Dance Teachers from The Back Stop Boogie Club taught the children to do a revolving Charleston Dance involving six complicated variations on the basic steps. The verdict was that they had had ‘a hummer of a time’ – an exceptionally good day!

Year 5 culture and history trip to London Year 5 culture and history trip to London

Year 5 set off on an epic adventure travelling by train down to Kings Cross, London. Armed with a rucksack and sleeping bag the children and staff crossed London by tube to reach the Golden Hinde; a replica of Francis Drake’s ship, which is moored on the River Thames. After stowing their bags on board, the children jumped on a London Bus to take them to the Tower of London where they met the Beefeaters and explored the exhibitions. Back on board ship, the children were transformed into Officers, Gunners or Barber Surgeons and life as a 16th century sailor began, learning about the different jobs on board and eating an authentic ship’s evening meal. After a night in sleeping bags on the wooden gun deck and breakfast of bread and cheese (and hot chocolate!) the children toured around Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre where the stage for the new production of Macbeth was being set up. The children had special drama session on the first act of Romeo and Juliet before heading back to Yorkshire and their comfortable own beds!

Michelin Starred Cookery at Malsis Michelin Starred Cookery at Malsis

Malsis prep school, in Cross Hills, North Yorkshire, has christened its new cookery room with help of award-winning Head Chef, Richard Upton. The pupils learnt all about using locally produced, fresh ingredients and how to create mouthwatering canapés from recipes specially adapted for the school by Michelin starred chef Nigel Haworth. The pupils also used Kenwood equipment they won in the 2009 National British Food Fortnight Competition.

Said Marcus Peel, Headmaster of Malsis School: “The new cookery room was fitted out, painted and equipped purely from extremely kind donations and the effort from parents and past pupils. It boasts four fully equipped cookery stations with a demonstration zone and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who has been and continues to be involved. Having a top rate chef to kick things off has been great! At Malsis we think it is essential to instill from a young age how good food is produced to create a healthy life-long habit and understanding. The cookery room has opened up all sorts of extra-curricular opportunities for the children; from making pancakes using free range eggs from their own chickens to fresh baked trout caught by themselves during activity time.”

Nigel Haworth said: “The children of Malsis School show amazing maturity and enthusiasm for food. This is the time when children should be learning about food; where it comes from; the importance of eating local food and its nutritional value – I wish them all the best with their new kitchen.”

DON’T TOUCH! Power line danger talk gives knowledge for life DON’T TOUCH! Power line danger talk gives knowledge for life

Malsis Year 7 pupils were given a talk on Electrical Safety by Leena Marcovic from C E Electric UK, the company which runs and regulates the National Grid. The children watched a video and took part in an interactive question and answer session, designed to heighten their awareness of the need to be safe around electricity installations.

Head of Science at Malsis School, Richard Skillington said: 'So many children do not appreciate how dangerous it is to play near electricity lines or enter substations. By the end of the presentation, our Year 7 pupils understood that this 'play' could lead to a serious injury or even loss of life. With this knowledge, we are sure that our Malsis pupils will think twice about where they play and will keep themselves and others safe around electricity installations. This is a lesson that will stay with them throughout their lives.”

Famous old boy screen writer inspires talent Famous old boy screen writer inspires talent

Just twenty young story writers out of hundreds were short listed for the 4th annual Simon Beaufoy Short Story Competition, run by top prep school, Malsis, in North Yorkshire. English teachers in over 60 schools across the North of England were asked to submit their two best entries in senior and junior age groups. Malsis pupils performed very well in both age groups: Toby and Poppy Anderson were both Highly Commended in the Junior Category (Year 5 & 6), and Freya Pearson and Amber Mullins were runners up in the Senior Category (Year 7 & 8).

Said Sarah Hill, organiser of the event and English Teacher at Malsis School: “The idea for the competition is to create a meaningful opportunity for children to write whole stories for a real audience.” The finalist’s stories were judged by Russell Jenkins, Northern Correspondent for The Times newspaper and old boy and Costa Book Award judge , Dan Fenton, who is a co-owner and director of John Sandoe Books in Chelsea, London.

Simon Beaufoy attended Malsis School from 1975- 1980 and lent his name to the competition following his success with ‘The Full Monty’ to help inspire current and future pupils to become celebrated authors. His subsequent success with Slumdog Millionaire has further boosted the competition’s profile and quality of entries.

Packed Audiences Entranced by Wizard of Oz Packed Audiences Entranced by Wizard of Oz

Both day and boarding children of Malsis prep school, North Yorkshire bursting with confidence took to the stage with their production of ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ The 60-strong cast and crew put on three stunning performances to packed audiences with mesmerising solo performances, energetic, original dance choreography and impressive acting - even miniature schnauser, Beau, playing Dorothy’s dog, Toto, didn’t put a paw wrong.

Watching the performance was Robin Case of Shrewsbury School, a veteran of drama production with several Edinburgh Fringe Festivals under his belt. He said: “In schools like Malsis, a play is always more than a play. It is a chance for boys and girls to share their ideas, delve into their imaginations, work hard together and handle real responsibility. All this was obvious in abundance in every word spoken, every song sung and every dance danced. The lead characters had delightful voices and sang their solos with real conviction. How lucky are the boys and girls at Malsis to be inspired by their Directors of Music and Drama. The happiness and vitality of the Malsis community shone through the happiness and vitality of the show.”

New Year - New pupilsNew Year - New pupils

Five new pupils started at Malsis prep and pre-prep school at the beginning of the Easter term getting this top private school off to a flying start in its 90th anniversary year. Despite knee deep snow that disrupted most schools in North Yorkshire, there was no delay to the start of term at Malsis with the school doors open to welcome the new children. Aged between eight and 12 years old, the new starters where from as far away as Spain, and as close as Embsay, adding to the delightful mix of children attending the school. Luis Serrano (12) from Granada in Spain was more than a little surprised in the 12 degree drop in temperature from home, but says: " I love boarding at Malsis, I have made lots of friends very quickly and I loved being able to play in the snow when I arrived in England.”

Festive season brings out new talentFestive season brings out new talent

Children of all ages at Malsis Preparatory School have acted, sung and danced their way to the end of term. Lower School's nativity ‘Shine Star Shine’ by Niki Davies was a big hit with fresh talent coming to light - literally- with Finn Richards (Year 1) as the troublesome star that wouldn't shine until he was taken to Bethlehem by Gabriel played by Max Ellison (also Year 1). Junior, Chamber and Chapel Choirs performed separately at the carol service under the expert eye of James Ashworth, Director of Music and former professional voice coach and soloist. The finale was an incredibly professional performance of Handel's Messiah, 'And the Glory of the Lord.' Additional support from Mr Ashworth's inexhaustible contacts in the world of music, saw a dozen soprano, alto, tenor and bass adult voices swell the combined choir to about 50 giving the children an amazing experience of what might lie in store for them if they continue their choral singing beyond Malsis. The sound was wonderful leaving the audience with goosebumps. Merry Christmas!

Over 100 hopeful children aged 10- 13 from across the North of England entered the popular competition and Mr Roger Beaufoy, father of ex-Malsis pupil Simon Beaufoy, the celebrated screenplay writer of Slumdog Millionaire, announced the winners 10th March.

Malsis pupil Amber Mullins won the Junior category with her story about ‘The Accident’. Writer Emma Fryer, one of the judges for the section said: “Amber’s story was a clear winner. The quality of writing was outstanding in terms of vocabulary, descriptions, characterization and it was beautifully structured. We loved the way that there were really two stories going on at the same time – the main story was a perfect framework for a much more subtle story that was revealed gradually. Very accomplished writing indeed.”

Ferdy Reynolds was the runner up in the Senior section with his story ‘Imprisoned’. Judge’s comments included: “This was quite an adult scenario with plenty of interesting and carefully detailed content with quite confident handling of a difficult setting. It was ambitious but with realism and panache. Whilst the influences are clear there is freshness about it.”
