There are four classes in Pre-Prep:
Kindergarten (3 - 4 years)
Reception (4 - 5 years)
Year One (5 - 6 years)
Year Two (6 - 7 years)
Each class has a fully qualified Teacher and Nursery Nurse. The
staff are committed and dedicated in providing the surroundings,
learning experiences and tasks appropriate to the children in their
care. They do this by
using their deep knowledge and understanding of how young children learn, along with current initiatives and their
experiences.
Kindergarten
is the first class in Pre-Prep.
With its welcoming and stimulating areas of play the children
can access and explore early learning aided by their Teacher and
Nursery Nurse.
Kindergarten have a wonderful wooded garden area, accessible from
the classroom door so that just as much learning can happen outdoors
as indoors.
Starting out
Settling the children into Kindergarten is our first priority. With
a staggered entry in September this allows the Kindergarten staff to
give care and support to each small group as they arrive and enables the
children to develop early confidence, security and happiness at
school.
Sessions
We recommend a minimum of 5 sessions per week for children in Kindergarten to begin with. These can be split into mornings/afternoons or 2/3 full days.
Reception
is adjacent to Kindergarten and the two classes work closely
together. The
transition from Kindergarten in Reception is seamless as a result.
The children enjoy full days in Reception and continue to have
access to the garden as well as their own outdoor classroom
workshop.
During this year children develop independence and motivation to
continue the learning path begun in Kindergarten.
They use their developing skills and initiative to find what
they need for activities, undertake tasks and have a go on their
own. Their day is
carefully managed and enhanced by their Class Teacher and Nursery
Nurse who plan according to the needs of each child in their early
development.
Year One and Year Two are the two classrooms in Garden House, which
was originally the Head Masters house.
Year One
have a carefully adapted classroom including ‘wet room’ and ‘role
play', reading, writing room and a variety of other learning areas.
This ensures that the transition from Reception is easy.
The children continue to use and access learning areas with
adult focus and class learning.
Continuity and progression of developing skills and learning,
motivation, enjoyment and time to consolidate learning are high
priority. With direct access
to the playground and close proximity to the woods and beautiful
school grounds outside learning is continued.
Year Two
certainly enjoy being the oldest in Pre-Prep as they physically move
upstairs into their classroom!
We are all too aware that they are still young children and
we are building foundations. We keep the emphasis on
practical work, taking the initiative and increasing independence
and enhancing the development of skills, knowledge and understanding,
alongside the positive attitudes to learning which have been
carefully nurtured and planned for during the three previous years.
Our aim in Pre-Prep is to work with each individual to ensure that
they are engaged, enthused, confident and competent to the very best
of their abilities. Here, we look at what the children can do and
their strengths. We use
these strengths to assess what they may find more difficult and to
set the best of foundations for future learning.
